FRANCE: Louis XVI, 1774-1790, AR écu, Paris, 1786-A, Ciani-2202, VG-90, pattern issue Écu de Calonne by Jean-Pierre Droz, variety with 6-segment lettered-edge collar (original strike), laureate bust left with LUD XVI D G FR - ET NAV REX around // two intertwined L's, in the form of a palm and laurel wreath, with 3 fleur-de-lis in center and crown above, with "SIT NOMEN DOMINI - BENEDICTUM 1786" around and A mintmark at bottom, original tone, very rare, PCGS graded Specimen 55. The Écu de Calonne was named after Charles-Alexandre de Calonne, the French Controller-General under Louis XVI. His reform of the government's administration and finance ultimately failed and led to the French Revolution.
