This medal was struck for the Metropolitan Museum of Art at the Paris Mint at the request of the donor, Hon. Levi P. Morton, formerly U.S. Minister to France, by medalists Bertrand Andrieu and Louis Jaley under the direction of Vivant Denon. In 1804 Napoleon made Denon director general of museums, a post he retained until 1815.
