IMPORTANT NOTE - The Buyer's Premium is now $20 per lot or 20% of the hammer price, whichever amount is greater. However, we have also reduced opening bids on lower value items to adjust for the new Buyer's Premium structure, so all-in costs are still very close to what they were in the past. This change in fee structure will allow us to continue to offer coins valued at less than $100 in addition to our higher value offerings. Contact us with any questions.
FRANCE: Napoleon I, as Emperor, 1805-1814, AE medal (32.57g), 1805, Bramsen-463, Julius-1480, d'Essling-1118, 42mm bronze medal for the Column of the Grande Armée or Vendôme Column of Paris by Andrieu and Brenet, laureate bust right with NAPOLEON - EMP. ET ROI around // Place Vendôme and the column of the Grande Armée with COLONNE DE LA - GRANDE ARMÉE around and CAMPAGNE DE / MDCCCV in exergue, small obverse field spot, plain edge, Unc. The Column of Austerlitz, built from 1806 to 1810 to commemorate the Battle of Austerlitz and the 1805 campaign, was later named the Victory Column and then the Column of the Grande Armée (not to be confused with the one at Wimille near Boulogne-sur-Mer, which bears the same name). It is inspired by Trajan's Column in Rome, with a spiral decoration around the shaft, but made of bronze using cannons captured from the Russian and Austrian armies. It was destroyed during the Paris Commune in 1871, but it was rebuilt from 1873 to 1875 at the request of the President of the Republic, Marshal MacMahon.
