FRANCE: Napoleon III, 1852-1870, AE 10 centimes, 1857-BB, KM-771.3, Franc 2014-133/42, Satirical Battle of Sedan type, hand engraved Prussian helmet over bust of Napoleon III, VF. This wonderful piece is one of many examples of engraved coins and tokens, and genuine coins of the period that bear countermarks, which display satirical references to the defeat of the French army under Napoleon III by the Prussians at Sedan - a small town near the border with Belgium. In the critical battle in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71, the French were humiliated when the Emperor ordered the white flag to be raised, formally surrendering to the Prussians the following day and subsequently being sent into exile in Germany.
