FRANCE: Republic, AE medal (107.1g), 1889, Maier-131, 64mm bronze medal for the Universal Exposition of Paris by Louis-Alexandre Bottée, Winged Fame blowing a trumpet and holding the bust of Marianne under an oak tree with RÉPUBLIQUE / FRANCAISE in left field, radiant star above, and rectangular cartouche below inscribed HUBER-MAYENBERGER // semi-nude man seated on an anvil and receiving the laurels of a helmeted female allegory, with a view of the Exposition with the Eiffel Tower below, and EXPOSITION - UNIVERSELLE around and "1889" in center, some obverse spotting, mostly mint red, BRONZE and cornucopia privy mark on edge], Unc. Louis-Alexandre Bottée, born March 14, 1852 in Paris where he died November 14, 1940, was a French medal engraver. He apprenticed at the age of 13 in a button factory where he was responsible for engraving. A student at the School of Decorative Arts, he entered Paulin Tasset's studio in 1869. Accepted in 1871 at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, he obtained, in 1878, the first Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving. He was awarded the gold medal at the Salon in 1900 and became an Officer of the Legion of Honor in 1903. He was elected a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1930.
