FRANCE: Third Republic, AV 50 francs, 1904-A, KM-831, Gad-1113, F-549, a lovely lustrous example! PCGS graded MS63. The unique "Génie ailé (Winged genius)" design was created in 1792 by Augustine Dupré. After the original appearance in 1792, this type was produced again in 1871. After that, the colloquially named "French Angel" was issued intermittently until 1898. The design was also used on coins in 1848 and 1849, and again from 1899 to 1906. Some refer to the coin as the "Lucky Angel" due to the unlikely escape from the guillotine by Dupré supposedly using a coin of this type as a bribe to a guard.
