FRENCH COCHINCHINA: AE sapeque, 1870, Lec-1, pattern issue in the name of Emperor of Annam Tu Duc; tu buc thong bao in Chu Nôm script // ECHANTILLON / DE / D. ULHORN, with date either side of central hole, an early die state example without die crack and a lovely specimen quality example! PCGS graded Specimen 63 RB, ex Howard A. Daniel III Collection. These rare patterns were produced by the Diedrich Uhlhorn Minting Company in Northern Germany. It was deemed too expensive to ship these coins from North Germany to French Cochinchina, so these pieces were never produced for circulation.
