FRENCH COCHINCHINA: AE sapèque, 1875, KM-1, Lec-2, a superb example! PCGS graded MS65 RB. The metropolitan French 1 centime coin dated 1875-K of the Bordeaux mint issue was used for these coins, and the French garrison at Saigon punched a 3mm round hole into them for circulation as a sapèque (or cash) coin in Cochinchina. These were not popular with the locals and they were quickly retired; estimates are that out of a million coins intended, only about 10,000 coins were holed.
