FRENCH COLONIES: Louis XVI, 1774-1793, AE stampee, ND (1779), KM-2, counterstamped on blank planchet, NGC graded XF45. , ex Louis Baptiste Dupont Collection. When this type circulated in the British Caribbean colonies, it was referred to as a "black dog." The name comes from the negative connotations of the word "dog," as they came from debased silver coins, and the dark color of those same debased coins. "Black dog" coins were also at times called "stampes" or "stampees", as they were typically the coins of other colonial powers such as French coins worth 2 sous or, equivalently, 24 diniers which were sometimes stamped to make them British currency.
