IMPORTANT NOTE - The Buyer's Premium is now $20 per lot or 20% of the hammer price, whichever amount is greater. However, we have also reduced opening bids on lower value items to adjust for the new Buyer's Premium structure, so all-in costs are still very close to what they were in the past. This change in fee structure will allow us to continue to offer coins valued at less than $100 in addition to our higher value offerings. Contact us with any questions.
FRENCH INDIA: AR 1/2 rupee (5.72g), "Surat", year 51, KM-76, cf. Stevens-6.168/171 for the general type, without any privy mark, VF-XF, RR. The rupee and fractions of this type were struck at Surat for the British Bombay Presidency, always dated year 46. Other versions exist dated years 43-45 and 47-53 and there is no evidence that these were authorized by the British. Most have suggested French authorization, possibly also struck at the Surat Mint by contract. Stevens has questioned that, suggesting that it might have been ordered by a local Nawab or the Marathas. The attribution to the French makes sense but remains theoretical.
