FRENCH INDOCHINA: AR medal (14.98g), 1885, Barac-284, Dorling-424, 30mm, Tonkin Expedition Military Campaign Medal (Médaille commémorative de l'expédition du Tonkin), silver decoration for the campaigns of 1883-1885, Paris Mint: helmeted bust of the Republic left with REPUBLIQUE - FRANÇAISE around and DANIEL DUPUIS in small letters on truncation, with laurel wreath around all // CAU-GIAÏ / SONTAY / BAC-NINH / FOU-TCHÉOU / FORMOSE / TUYEN-QUAN / PESCADORES (cornucopia privy mark) in eight lines within inner circle, with TONKIN CHINE ANNAM. 1883-1885. around and laurel wreath around all, with integral loop and hanger, no ribbon, lightly cleaned, but appealing coloration as it retones, plain edge, EF The Tonkin Expedition commemorative medal was awarded to all the French soldiers and sailors who took part in the battles of the Tonkin campaign and the Sino-French War between 1883 and 1885. The medal, decreed by a law of 6 September 1885, was minted at the Monnaie de Paris and distributed shortly before the Bastille Day parade on 14 July 1886. The medal ribbon, envisaged in the law of 6 September 1885 as half green and half yellow, was redesigned in the course of production, and the final version featured four green stripes on a yellow background. The ribbon is missing on this example.
