IMPORTANT NOTE - The Buyer's Premium is now $20 per lot or 20% of the hammer price, whichever amount is greater. However, we have also reduced opening bids on lower value items to adjust for the new Buyer's Premium structure, so all-in costs are still very close to what they were in the past. This change in fee structure will allow us to continue to offer coins valued at less than $100 in addition to our higher value offerings. Contact us with any questions.
GANDHARA: Anonymous, ca. 400-325 BC, AR "unit" (3.57g), Pieper, 6-arm symbol, with two of the arms running through the central circle, blank reverse; very thick (4.5 mm) and narrow (13 mm); actual attribution undetermined, likely an emergency local issue; unpublished and believed to be unique, bold VF, RRR, ex Ian Todd Collection. The consignor dated this piece circa 550 BC, based on his calculating the weight as 1/3 croesus stater, but this is irrelevant. The form of the 6-arm symbol is very different from the Gandhara "bent-bar" and fractional piece, which are dated circa 450-340 BC, and this piece seems to have a later form of the 6-arm. Unfortunately, neither the find location nor the source of this piece was recorded, so this remains a "mystery coin" awaiting further research!
