GERMANY: Weimar Republic, AR medal, 1932, Kahle-C1932-01cKahle-C1932-01c, 36mm silver medal by Oskar Glöckler, commemorating the Sinking of the Training Ship Niobe; ALLES FÜRS VATERLAND VOLKSSPENDE-NIOBE around image of the Segelschulschiff Niobe // DEN OPFERN VON FEHMARN ZUM GEDENKEN around cross above the sea with date "26.7.1932" either side, "835 PR. MÜNZE BERLIN." on edge, a superb example, PCGS graded Specimen 65. The Segelschulschiff Niobe was a tall ship used by the Reichsmarine to train cadets and aspiring NCOs. She sank during a white squall on July 26, 1932, with the loss of 69 lives. A memorial monument to the Niobe was erected at Gammendorfer Strand on Fehmarn island, within view of the site of the sinking.
