GERMANY: Weimar Republic, AR medal (21.73g), 1932, M&P-7-8/04, 37mm silver medal for The Tragedy of the Niobe; ALLES FURS VATERLAND / VOLKSSPENDE-NIOBE around sailing ship left and anchors at either side // DEN OPFERN VON FEHMARN ZUM GEDENKEN around long cross above water with date "26. 7. 1932" flanking cross, all within inner circle with small Iron Cross with foliage at bottom, with PREUSS 900 FEIN incuse on edge, a wonderful lustrous example! PCGS graded MS64. The Niobe disaster of 1932 was the tragic capsizing and sinking of the German Navy's sailing training ship Niobe in the Baltic Sea on July 26, 1932, due to a sudden, powerful squall, resulting in the deaths of 69 of the 109 people on board, mostly naval cadets.
