GERMANY: Weimar Republic, brown porcelain medal, Oberammergau, 1922, Scheuch-833a, 48mm brown porcelain medal featuring the three crosses on Calvary Hill surrounded by the script OBERAMMERGAU / 1922 / crossed swords on bottom // the radiant Madonna flanked on each side by cherubim and stars, a lovely well engraved chocolate brown example! PCGS graded MS64. The Oberammergau Passion Play is a unique tradition where the citizens of Oberammergau stage a play depicting the Passion of Christ, from the Entry into Jerusalem to the Resurrection. The play's origins stem from a vow made in 1633 after a plague struck the town, where the villagers promised to perform the play every ten years if the plague would cease. The 1922 performance was the 20th Passion Play, and it included scenes from Jesus's Passion, including the Last Supper, the Crucifixion, and the Resurrection. In 1922 the Catholic Church gave the play a Missio Canonica, a certification that the beliefs of the Catholic Church are being taught or, in this case, being presented.
