GERMANY: Weimar Republic, iron plaque (365.68g), 1931, 148x109mm large iron plaque by Heinrich Moshage for the 200th Anniversary of the Buderus Iron Works; 1731 - 200 JAHRE - 1931 / BUDERUS'SCHE EISENWERKE below workers and female figure, AUSFÜHRUNG BUDERUS HIRZENHAIN HESSEN at bottom, AU. In 1931, the German company Buderus'sche Eisenwerke celebrated its 200th anniversary, marking the establishment of its metallurgical roots in 1731. To commemorate the milestone, the firm produced a limited-edition cast-iron plaque (Kunstguss) depicting workers and industrial scenes. Heinrich Friedrich Moshage (1896-1968) was a German sculptor, woodcarver, draftsman and medalist. In the 1920s, he was among the artists in Munich who designed the most numerous annual plaques for the art foundry Lauchhammer Kunstguss GmbH. He undertook study trips to France, Belgium, Italy, and Austria before finally settling in Düsseldorf in 1932. Later, he worked as a sculptor in Düsseldorf and Munich. Moshage was a master of medals and portrait sculpture. He was particularly instrumental in reviving artistic iron casting working with the Buderus iron foundry.
