Kaufmann made by [Robert] Ball [Nachfolger] of Berlin in blackened or "Berlin Iron"; Admiral Reinhard Scheer, uniformed bust left with ADMIRAL SCHEER DER SIEGER VOM SKAGERRAK around / 31 MAI - 1 JUNI 1916 aside battleship, bow-on view, its guns turned to starboard, firing a broadside, EF, ex Homer Athanassiou Collection, ex Coin Galleries Auction November 17, 1981, Lot 1227. First World War portrait medal by Professor H. Kaufmann commemorating Admiral Reinhard Scheer and the Battle of Jutland, 31 May-1 June 1916 (known in Germany as 'The Victory off the Skaggerak'). In common with other German medallic tributes to the only major fleet action between the British and German navies during the First World War, it was claimed by Kaufmann as a resounding German victory. The obverse text is translated as 'Admiral Scheer the victor of Skagerrak.' Admiral Reinhard Scheer (1863-1928) became Commander-in-Chief of the German High Seas Fleet in January 1916.
