GILBERT & ELLICE ISLANDS: 1 shilling, Fanning Island, ND (1942), SB1-541b, Fanning Island Plantations Ltd, left half of one pound note, value in blue, PCGS graded VF25. Fanning Island is today known as "Tabuaeran" and is part of Kiribati. In 1942 an American army task force moved onto the island and the soldiers rapidly absorbed the available supply of Australian currency in circulation. A quantity of approximately 3,000 bank notes were ordered (printed in Honolulu) by coconut plantation manager R. G. Garrett, to alleviate the shortage of cash. The notes were later cut in half and used as theater and cinema tickets with the left half of the cut note having a hand written value of 1 shilling (1/-) while the right half became a 2 shilling (2/-) value.
