GREAT BRITAIN: AE evasion halfpenny (6.90g), 1776, Atkins-121, bust right of George III (?) with GEORGE - GORDON around // seated Britannia with BRITONS - RULE. around with "1776" in exergue, diagnostic obverse die break, central details weak (were probably never there), plain edge, Good. The coin shortage of Great Britain in the late eighteenth century was exacerbated by the extensive use of British halfpennies in the American Colonies. This led to the production of evasion and counterfeit halfpennies. To avoid the severe penalties for counterfeiting, the producers made their issues with changes to the legend and/or design, made the new pieces appear worn right off the presses, gave the pieces dates which were never used for genuine issues, etc.
