GREAT BRITAIN: AE medal (11.72g), 1739, Adams & Chao-PBvi-4-D, 38mm bronze medal of Admiral Vernon and the Taking of Porto Bello, figure of Admiral Vernon three-Quarter left with baton in left hand and THE BRITISH GLORY REVIV D BY ADMIRAL VERNON around, with canon and ship behind // ships in busy harbor scene with WHO TOOK PORTO BELLO WITH SIX SHIPS ONLY around and NOV 22 1739 in exergue, possibly ex-mount, but if so, expertly removed, plain edge, VF-EF, R6 (Adams & Chao). Admiral Edward Vernon was a British naval commander during the War of Jenkins' Ear in 1739. He squared off with Admiral Blas of the Spanish Navy and took the port of Porto Bello, now in Panama, with only six ships. Consequently, he became very popular in England and the American colonies, and was commemorated on many medals.
