GREAT BRITAIN: AE medal (17.27g), 1739, Adams & Chao-PBv 24-S, 37mm bronze medal of Admiral Vernon and the Taking of Porto Bello: figure of Admiral Vernon three-quarter left with baton in left hand and THE BRITISH GLORY REVIV D BY ADMIRAL VERNON around // ships in busy harbor scene with "HE TOOK PORTO BELLO WITH SIX SHIPS ONLY 1739" with BY COURAGE AND CONDUCT in exergue, somewhat crude, plain edge, F-VF, R8 (Adams & Chao). Admiral Edward Vernon was a British naval commander during the War of Jenkins' Ear in 1739. He squared off with Admiral Blas of the Spanish Navy and took the port of Porto Bello, now in Panama, with only six ships. Consequently, he became very popular in England and the American colonies, and was commemorated on many medals.
