The original Warwick vase was a huge marble vase from the 2nd century AD. The vase was nearly six feet tall and was excavated in 1770 from a lake at Hadrian's Villa in Tivoli and acquired by Sir William Hamilton, Ambassador to Naples. It was later purchased by the Earl of Warwick who installed it on the grounds of Warwick Castle. It is now in the Glasgow Museums and Art Galleries. Thomason completed his copy of this vase in 1821, which was cast in iron with brass handles and a decorative finish.
