GREAT BRITAIN: AE road pass (15.06g), 1737, Mitch-5663, with number "876" engraved at bottom of obverse, oval 36x32mm bronze road pass, pierced for suspension, crowned Royal cypher for George II (1727-1760) within circular border // THE / KINGS / PRIUATE / ROADS / 17TR37 with the TR in script, a few minor flan flaws, plain edge, Very Good to Fine. The King's Road from St. James Palace to Hampton Court on the Thames River was about an 11 mile route and was closed to the general public. The fees generated from the sale of these passes payed for the gatekeepers and the upkeep of the road. The script TR on the reverse apparently refers to Thomas Ripley, Surveyor of the King's Private Roads from 1737 to 1756.
