The Battle of Blenheim was a major battle during the War of the Spanish Succession. The French King Louis XIV attempted to sieze Vienna in order to force a peace settlement and to remove Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I from the war. The Duke of Marlborough marched his forces south from Bedburg and helped to defend Vienna in order to keep Leopold an active participant in the Grand Alliance. The Grand Alliance had been formed to slow the attempts at expansion by Louis XIV.
