Joseph Muspratt, an Irish-born chemical manufacturer, was a founding member of the Liverpool Mechanics Institution, in addition to the Liverpool Institute for Boys and the Liverpool College of Practical Chemistry. He also helped found the St. Helens and Runcorn Gap Railway. The Liverpool Mechanics Institute was originally called the Liverpool Mechanics' School of Arts, the name being changed in 1832, and this medal may date to that period. The main purpose of the Institute was to provide education to working men, mainly through evening classes.
