BARNARDO'S HOMES" / PRESENTED / TO / (engraved) ALBERT JONES. / FOR / GOOD CONDUCT / AND / LENGTH OF SERVICE, all within laurel wreath // figure of draped woman facing with crowd of children and adults around, all within inner circle with "WHOSO SHALL RECEIVE ONE SUCH LITTLE CHILD IN MY NAME RECEIVETH ME" around,nice deep orange tone, some obverse hairlines, prooflike, in original plush box, plain edge, Unc. Thomas John Barnardo (1845-1905) was born in Dublin and founded and directed homes for poor children. The first of these homes appeared in 1870 in London and 100,000 children were helped before Barnardo's death. During his lifetime, 112 district homes were opened throughout the United Kingdom (one source says that they were also present in Canada). The foundation still exists today providing almost £190 million each year on more than 400 local services for these same groups.
