GREAT BRITAIN: Anne, 1702-1714, AE coronation medal, 1702, MI-228-4, Eimer-390, 39mm, engraved by J. Croker, diademed and draped bust of Anne left // Anne (as Pallas-Athena) standing right holding shield and hurling thunderbolt at two-headed and four-armed serpentine monster (representing James III [the Old Pretender] and Louis XIV of France) to right, holding rocks and clubs, coronation date (April 23, 1702) in exergue, in Latin and Roman numerals, in a remarkable state of preservation with almost full red luster, NGC graded MS64 RB. This medal conveys the real threat seen by England in the form of a Jacobite-French alliance, and how much the former relied upon the success of Anne in stabilizing the post-Stuart England, soon to formally join with Scotland in the form of the United Kingdom.Tied with only one other example for the highest graded (Top Pop) at NGC.
