GREAT BRITAIN: George III, 1760-1820, AE penny, 1797, KM-618, S-3777, 'Cartwheel' type, struck at the Soho Mint, Birmingham, a lovely mint state example! PCGS graded MS63 BN, ex Joe Sedillot Collection. This type was the first base metal regal pennies to circulate in Britain and were produced by Matthew Boulton using a steam powered press at the Soho Mint in Birmingham in 1797. This type was struck in copper by Boulton for several years after 1797 with no change in date, along with some later strikes in a variety of metals.
