GREAT BRITAIN: Victoria, 1837-1901, AR medal, Volunteer Long Service Medal, awarded to 785 SGT. G. SHIELDS 1ST EDINBURGH VOL. ART., with original dark green ribbon, XF, ex Joseph E. Lang Collection. The Volunteer Long Service Medal was instituted in 1894 as an award for long service by some officers and other ranks of the United Kingdom's Volunteer Force. Award of the medal was discontinued when it was superseded by the Territorial Force Efficiency Medal in 1908. The original version of 1894, created by George William de Saulles, shows the effigy of Queen Victoria wearing a crown, a veil and the Star of the Order of the Garter inscribed VICTORIA REGINA; the reverse shows a palm and laurel wreath that supports a scrolled banner bearing the inscription FOR LONG SERVICE IN THE VOLUNTEER FORCE in four lines. The 1st Edinburgh Artillery Volunteer Corps was formed on November 4, 1859, in response to an invasion scare, becoming a part-time volunteer unit supporting the Royal Artillery. Initially composed largely of artists, the corps grew to nine batteries by 1860.
