GREAT BRITAIN: Victoria, 1837-1901, SET of 2 AE clichés, 1851, cf. BHM-2463, cf. Eimer-1456, set of 2 clichés for the Great Exhibition Prize Medal by William & Leonard Charles Wyon, obverse (118.60g, AU) has conjoined busts of Victoria and Prince Albert left with 2 dolphins and trident below and VICTORIA D:G: BRIT REG F D - ALBERTUS PRINCEPS CONJUX - MDCCCLI around, reverse (92.35g, Choice AU) has draped and laureate Britannia seated right, crowning Industry with laurel, with Europe, Asia, Africa, and America attending, with DISSOCIATA LOCIS CONCORDI - PACE LIGAVIT around, with "LEONARD C: WYON / DES: & SC:" and "ROYAL MINT.LONDON" in exergue, plain edges. These clichés are for the Great Exhibition Prize Medal for the event in Hyde Park in 1851. It was awarded for production excellence. On the actual medal, the recipient's name was inscribed on the edge. The Exhibition was conceived as a venue for showcasing the works of British Industry in the wake of foreign competition highlighted in the Paris Exhibition of 1849.
