GREAT BRITAIN: gilt AE medal, British Red Cross Society Medal for War Service, with original hanger and ribbon, AU, ex Joseph E. Lang Collection. The British Red Cross Society Medal for War Service is a gilt bronze medal established in 1920 and awarded to personnel who provided at least 1,000 hours of unpaid service (or 500 hours for drivers/bearers) in the UK during World War I. It was designed by J. Badeley, manufactured by J.R. Gaunt, and worn on a white ribbon. The obverse features a Greek cross surrounded by a laurel wreath, with the inscription BRITISH RED CROSS SOCIETY FOR WAR SERVICE 1914-1918. The reverse has INTER ARMA CARITAS ("Amidst war, charity") in the center.
