GREAT BRITAIN: white metal medal, 1854, BHM-2668A; Eimer-1493; Allen SY-1856/0005, Florence Nightingale Tribute Medal by J. Pinches, FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE around half-length seated figure, reading, within a beaded oval frame; on either side are sprays of roses, thistles and shamrocks / an oval badge flanked by palm sprays and bearing the words: BLESSED ARE THE MERCIFUL, above it are three mullets and at the center is a cross in splendor surmounted by a crown and the letters VR (Victoria Regina); below is a scroll inscribed: CRIMEA, and around the edge of the medal the inscription: AS A MARK OF ESTEEM AND GRATITUDE FOR HER DEVOTION TO THE QUEEN'S BRAVE SOLDIERS, Almost Unc to Unc., R. Although dated 1854, the medal was struck in 1856 and sold by Pinches at the Crystal Palace in May of that year to commemorate the unveiling of the Scutari Monument by Queen Victoria in the presence of Crimean veterans.
