GREAT BRITAIN: white metal medal, ND [1828], BHM-1336.10, 73mm, from the Medallic Illustrations of Science and Philosophy series by Thomason - Geology, UNC, R. From the 16 medal series, "Medallic Illustrations of Science and Philosophy" by Thomason issued in 1828. The medals were struck in his Birmingham plant and the set was originally sold with a magnifying glass. Sir Edward Thomason (1769-1849) was a manufacturer and inventor in Birmingham knighted by King William IV. At age 16 he was articled to Matthew Boulton in the Soho Foundry. He began manufacturing in his father's factory around 1793, establishing a trade in gilt and plated buttons. The business expanded into manufacture of medals, tokens and coins, and later plated gold and silver works. In 1835 he sold the business to Whitegrave and Collis.
