GREAT MONGOLS: Chingiz Khan, 1206-1227, AE medium dirham (3.00g), Samarqand, AH621//621, A-3703A, obverse legend khani / chingiz khan / al-'adil / al-a'zam with the standard kalima on the reverse, both sides have the mint and date in words clearly legible in the margin; full strike on both sides, VF, RRRR. The only other example of this type was an inferior and damaged piece sold in our Auction 23, lot 413, in 2015, without a clear mint name and only 62x legible of the date. According to the eminent scholar Pavel Petrov, "This [the previous example] is a unique coin (new type) with name (title) of Chingiz Khan. The mint name is not clear, but probably is read as bi samar[qand]. The type doesn't fit to known coins of 618-619; I'd suggest that this coin was struck in 621-622." This piece, the second known example, finally confirms that the mint is indeed Samarqand and the date AH621! Anonymous khani copper coins were struck at Samarqand and are dated AH618-619, probably also AH617.
