GREAT MONGOLS: Töregene, 1241-1246, AR dirham (2.74g), Tabriz, AH642, A-1976, horseman left, turning back to shoot an arrow, hare running below the horse, lovely example, choice Very Fine, ex. Tony Ettinger collection. Anonymous, with title "chief of the great Mongol nation" (ulugh mughul ulus beg) on the obverse above the archer. The horseman's face and parts of the horse have been scraped, undoubtedly for religious reasons, as technically, Islamic gold and silver coins were forbidden to show any animal or human being (often permissible on copper coins). The inscriptions, both religious and political, were not scraped or damaged.
