IMPORTANT NOTE - The Buyer's Premium is now $20 per lot or 20% of the hammer price, whichever amount is greater. However, we have also reduced opening bids on lower value items to adjust for the new Buyer's Premium structure, so all-in costs are still very close to what they were in the past. This change in fee structure will allow us to continue to offer coins valued at less than $100 in addition to our higher value offerings. Contact us with any questions.
GRIQUALAND WEST: Victoria, 1873-1880, AE penny, 1890, KM-X8, Hern-GT20, Emblem of the London Missionary Society, a dove flying with an olive branch in its beak with legend above and below, a wonderful lustrous mint state example! NGC graded MS64 BN. Griquatown (Griekwastad) was the capital of the British Colony of Griqualand West from 1873 to 1880, with its own flag and currency, before it was annexed into the Cape Colony. These coins, it has since been discovered, were not produced by Nolte & Co. as previously thought, but by L. Chr. Lauer, "Munzprageanstalt und Abzeichenfabrik " of Nurnberg, for whom Nolte & Co. acted as agent, which therefore accounts for the letters LLC, apparently Lauer's monogram, appearing on some of the Free State patterns.
