GUATEMALA: AR medal, 1908, commemorative medal struck by the Municipalidad [de Guatemala], GUATEMALA LIBRE E INDEPENDIENTE around artist cutting legend into obelisk, five other obelisks behind / EL LIBRE OFRECE PAZ PERO EL SIERVO JAMAS around angel armed with arrows, stepping on broken chains that bound the two worlds and shedding abundance from a cornucopia in left hand on the American continent, and placing a laurel branch on the old world, EF to About Unc, R. Based on the original 1821 medal of José Casildo España. On September 15, 1821, Central America declared its independence from Spain. Article 16 of the Declaration of Independence stated that a medal be struck to perpetuate forever the memory of that day. The design was made by the engraver José Casildo España (who engraved his initials "JCE" on the scroll beneath the artist's feet). The original was minted in silver, copper and gilt-copper.
