GUATEMALA: Fernando VII, 1808-1821, AR 8 reales, 1821-NG, KM-69, El-82, assayer M, attractive tone, prooflike surfaces under the toning, light adjustment marks (typical for these), very bold strike, highest graded by NGC (April 2016), NGC graded MS64, RR, ex Whittier Collection. In 1821, Ferdinand VII's power in Spain had been considerably weakened by conflicts with the French and others. When Mexico declared the Plan de Iguala, the final step towards independence, Mariano Aycinena y Piñol and other Creoles demanded that Captain General Gabino Gaínza declare Guatemala and the rest of Central America free from Spanish control. Ayacinena y Piñol lobbied for Guatemala to become part of the Mexican Empire of Iturbide. While this didn't occur, he remained in the legislature and was an advisor to future Governors, and eventually became a dictator of Guatemala.
