GUATEMALA: medal (49.82g), 1908, 43mm copper-nickel medal by the Municipalidad (de Guatemala), artist cutting legend into obelisk with five other obelisks in background with "(cross) GUATEMALA LIBRE * E INDEPENDIENTE*" around // angel stepping on broken chains between two globes and spilling abundance from cornucopia in left hand on the American continent and placing laurel branch on the old world with MUNICIPALIDAD / DE / 1908 in upper right field and "(cross) EL LIBRE OFRECE PAZ.PERO EL SIERVO JAMAS." around, plain edge, EF, R. This design is based on the original 1821 medal of José Casildo España, one of which we handled in our Auction 25. Central America declared its independence from Spain on September 15, 1821. The engraver's initials "J.C.B." are on the scroll beneath the artist's feet on the obverse.
