HABBARIDS OF SIND: Muhammad b. al-Ash'ath, 812-815, AE fals (1.5g), NM, ND, A-—, obverse legend mimma amara / bihi al-amir i- / bn al-ash'ath, reverse just muhammad / rasul / Allah, with minor symbol below, choice VF, RRRR. The assigment to Muhammad al-Ash'ath is tentative, as it appears only as "bin al-ash'ath", with what appears to be just the letter alif after "al-amir". It is well-known from Arabic chronicles that Muhammad al-Ash'ath was assigned the governorship of Sistan during the first month of AH197, but was shortly afterwards forced east of Bust, and he may well have been represented in Sind, though his name is not mentioned in the sporadic notes preserved by al-Baladhuri. From somewhere in the east he returned to Zaranj in Sistan, where he was captured and gruesomely murdered around the middle of AH200. It is also possible that another unknown brother of Muhammad al-Ash'ath was assigned some degree of governorship in Sind.
