HANOVER: AE medal, 1848, Knigge-5544, Knyph.-7269, 42mm bronze medal by Brehmer for Herman Wilhelm Bödeker; bust of same left // inscription, prooflike Unc. Hermann Wilhelm Bödeker (1799-1875) was a Protestant pastor in Hanover, who was known primarily for his charitable work. In 1848, Bödeker became an honorary citizen of Hanover. Bödeker also agitated against animal cruelty (pamphlet Über Tierquälerei "On Animal Cruelty" 1844) and thereby initiated the founding of the Thierschutzvereins der Königlichen Residenzstadt Hannover (Animal Protection Association of the Royal Residence City of Hanover).
