HAWAII: Kalakaua, 1874-1891, AR ½ dollar (hapalua), 1883, KM-6, PCGS graded About Unc details, altered surfaces. The master hubs and dies for this coinage were prepared by the United States Mint's Chief Engraver, Charles Barber. He worked from designs submitted by Spreckels and subsequently modified by Mint Director Horatio C. Burchard. The circulating coinage of King Kalakaua was executed at the San Francisco Mint between November of 1883 and June of 1884, though all pieces bore the earlier date. Of the 700,000 Minted coins across all varieties, 612,245 were later redeemed and exchanged for US standard coinage and then melted. This leaves less than 87,700 in existence.
