HESSE-CASSEL: Friedrich I, 1730-1751, AE heller, Schmalkalden, 1731, KM-7, Eklund-1422, a lovely lustrous chocolate brown mint state example! PCGS graded MS63 BN, ex Joe Sedillot Collection. Frederick I had become Landgrave of Hesse-Cassel in 1730 after the death of his father, Charles I. At the same time, he continued to reign as King of Sweden, though his power there was limited due to Sweden’s parliamentary system. His rule in Hesse-Cassel was absolutist and centralized, focusing on courtly splendor and military efficiency. Hesse-Cassel was known for its well-organized army, which would later become a source of income through the leasing of troops. In 1731, the landgraviate was investing in administrative reforms, military readiness, and economic development, though finances were often strained due to military expenditures.
