IMPORTANT NOTE - The Buyer's Premium is now $20 per lot or 20% of the hammer price, whichever amount is greater. However, we have also reduced opening bids on lower value items to adjust for the new Buyer's Premium structure, so all-in costs are still very close to what they were in the past. This change in fee structure will allow us to continue to offer coins valued at less than $100 in addition to our higher value offerings. Contact us with any questions.
HINTATA: Sulayman b. Wanudin, early 12th century, AR dirham (1.28g), NM, ND, A-477H, just the name Sulayman in the obverse center, Wanudin in the reverse center; divided kalima in the margins; struck during the rise of the Almohads, likely in exchange for military services that helped its first Imam 'Abd al-Mu'min (AH524-558) attain power; unpublished & the 2nd known specimen, bold VF, RRRR. The first known example sold in our Auction 50, lot 205. The Hintata were based in the High Atlas east of Marrakesh, later in the city of Marrakesh itself. They provided military assistance to various Almohad and subsequent Merinid rulers. At some point in the AH520s or 530s Sulayman b. Wanudin was appointed as Almohad governor in Tlemcen, though it is more likely that the coins were actually struck further to the south, possibly as far away as the High Atlas. There are no known coins of the later Hintata rulers.
