HINTATA: Sulayman b. Wanudin, early 6th century, AR dirham (1.33g), NM, ND, A-477H, just the name Sulayman in the obverse center, Wanudin in the reverse center; divided kalima in the margins; struck during the rise of the Almohads, likely in exchange for military services that helped the its first Imam 'Abd al-Mu'min (AH524-558) attain power; unpublished and unique, F-VF, RRRR. The Hintata were based in the High Atlas east of Marrakesh, later in the city of Marrakesh itself. They provided military assistance to various Almohad and subsequent Merinid rulers. At some point in the AH520s or 530s Sulayman b. Wanudin was appointed as Almohad governor in Tlemcen, though it is more likely that the coins were actually struck further to the south, possibly as far away as the High Atlas. There are no known coins of the later Hintata rulers.
