HOLLAND: AR daalder of 32 stuivers (29.08g), Haarlem, 1572, Delmonte-160, siege issue struck on an octagonal planchet, counterstamped with mintmaster's half lion mark, city coat of arms, and date, a very attractive example for this rare type! PCGS graded AU55, R, ex Joe Sedillot Collection. The Siege of Haarlem occurred during the Eighty Years' War. From December 11, 1572 to July 13, 1573 an army of Philip II of Spain, under the command of Fadrique Álvarez de Toled, laid bloody siege to the city of Haarlem in the Netherlands, whose loyalties had begun wavering during the previous summer. After the naval battle of Haarlemmermeer and the defeat of a land relief force, the starving city surrendered and the garrison was massacred.
