HUNGARY: Bela IV, 1235-1270, AR obol, Réthy/Probszt-241, tower, lys either side above downward crescent / Hebrew letter het, within floral circle, crudely struck, Fine, S. The early kings of Hungary employed Jewish mintmasters until the late 13th Century. Although their identities remain unknown, their mintmarks, which are assumed to be their initials, remain on some of the coins they minted. This type was struck at an unknown mint in Croatia. Dimnik-Dobrinic attribute this issue to the period when Bela was appointed Duke from 1220-1225.
