HUNGARY: Karl VI, 1711-1740, AE kreuzer token (2.01g), ND (1730), Herinek-1224, Neum-170, 19mm copper token for the Pester Invalidenhaus (Home for Disabled Veterans) located in Pest; crowned double-headed imperial eagle with emperor's monogram on shield // numeral 1 inside a laurel wreath, VF. The Invalidenhaus in the city of Pest (in the eastern part of modern-day Budapest, Hungary) was founded under Emperor Charles VI to provide housing, medical care, and a community for disabled or retired soldiers. Because regular circulating currency was often scarce, institutions like veterans' hospitals or workhouses issued their own local scrip/tokens. This Hausgeld could only be spent within the facility's internal economy (such as buying food or supplies at the home's canteen), which helped control the institutional budget and prevented inmates from spending the money externally on alcohol or gambling.
