ILKHAN: Ghazan Mahmud, 1295-1304, AR dirham (2.55g), Baghdad, AH696, A-2169, first reform issue, by far the finest known example, choice XF-AU, RRRR. The first reform issue of Ghazan Mahmud was introduced in AH696 at the 2.52g weight standard as the previous Ilkhan dirhams (AH678-696). This standard is known only in silver, from the mints of Baghdad and Tabriz. It was reduced to 2.16g later the same year, which saw the mint name formula moved from the right and left edged of the kalima to the space between the 1st and 2nd lines of the kalima. The only examples on CoinArchives of the present type were sold in our auctions 16, 36, and 42, none with the quality of this example.
