ILKHAN: Uljaytu, 1304-1316, AR dirham (2.19g), Shahr-i Islam Ûjân, AH706, A-2180, medieval city, given the epithet of shahr-i islam by Ghazan Mahmud, the first known coin of any sort from the mint of Ujan, located about 60 km southeast of Tabriz, bold strike, choice EF, RRR. According to geographic work of Mustawfi, composed about 1340, the town of Ujan, which had been devastated by the Mongol invasion, was rebuilt by Ghazan Mahmud and renamed Shahr-i Islam. Although the town was soon reduced to a village, the surrounding district was particularly fertile agriculturally and remained a favorite campsite for military activities until the late 19th century. It was located just outside the modern town of Bostanabad. A modern light industrial district has now been built over parts of the site of the abandoned village. This is the first known coin from Ujan.
